Guide

What the reporting rules mean

Platforms report, they do not tax

Since 2024 marketplaces in the UK and the EU send the tax office the names, addresses and sales totals of sellers who pass the threshold (the "digital platform reporting rules", known in the EU as DAC7). The US and Canada have similar rules. No new tax comes with it: it lets the tax office check that what you declare matches what the platforms saw.

The thresholds, per platform

In the UK and the EU a platform reports you once you make 30 or more sales, or receive €2,000 or more (about £1,700), in a calendar year. In the US a Form 1099-K is due over $20,000 and 200 transactions. Each platform counts only its own sales.

Under the threshold is not tax-free

Whether you owe tax depends on whether you are trading, not on the report. Selling your own unwanted things for less than you paid is usually not taxable. Buying to resell is trading, reported or not. In the UK the first £1,000 of trading income a year is covered by the trading allowance.

What to do now

  • Keep a record of what you paid for the things you sell.
  • Add up sales across every platform you use.
  • Check whether you need to file a tax return.

Questions

Will eBay or Vinted tell HMRC about my sales?

Platforms report UK sellers who make 30 or more sales or receive about £1,700 (€2,000) or more in a calendar year. The report goes to HMRC by the end of January after the year.

Do I have to pay tax if I am reported?

Not necessarily. Selling personal possessions is usually not taxable. If you buy things to resell, or make things to sell, that is trading and tax may be due on your profit above any allowance.

Is the threshold per platform or in total?

Per platform: each one counts only the sales made through it. The tax office, however, looks at your total income from all of them.

What does a platform send?

Your name, address, date of birth, tax or national insurance number where held, bank details, the number of sales and the total received, with the fees the platform kept.
